Achant Sharath Kamal was born on July 12, 1982 in Tamil
Nadu, India and hails from a Telugu speaking family.
An alumnus of PSBB
Nungambakkam School, he completed his graduation from Loyola College, Chennai.
Kamal, boasting of a natural tendency to play the game was keenly devoted to it
as well.
Achant Sharath began proving his capability when he captured
the senior category title in the state of Tamil Nadu. He won the National Table
Tennis Championship in 2003.
Achant Sharath came into the news after he won the first
individual gold medal for India in the 2006 Commonwealth games at Melbourne.
Besides winning an individual gold medal, he was instrumental in India’s
victory in table tennis against Singapore.
He works in the Indian Oil Corporation.
Achant Sharath Kamal in the first Indian sport player to win
a gold medal in Table Tennis in the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Before that he won
the individual gold medal in the 2004 Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship at
Kuala Lumpur. The same year he was conferred the Arjuna Award.
Achant Sharath Kamal Achievements:
- First Indian to win gold medal at the Melbourne Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship.
- He won the National Table Tennis Championship in 2003.
- He was conferred the Arjuna Award in 2004.
- At the 16th Commonwealth Table Tennis Championship at Kuala Lampur in 2004, he won a gold medal in men’s singles category. Thus he became the first Indian player to win a gold medal in Table Tennis in the Commonwealth Games.
